The Ohio State football team has had a rough few days. Losing to Oregon on Saturday night sent a lot of bad thoughts throughout the fanbase. Ryan Day got out-coached in a close game yet again. Now the Buckeyes have to win the rest of their games to guarantee themselves a CFP spot.

It's not all bad, though. Ohio State has had some players step up and emerge as really good players. No player has done that more than freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith. Smith came in with some of the biggest hype surrounding a player in the history of the Ohio State football program. Somehow, he's lived up to it.

The Buckeyes have needed his offense. In his first six games, Smith has seven touchdowns. That's the most touchdowns from a true freshman receiver in the history of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He has 32 catches for 553 yards and is a matchup nightmare.

Ohio State football player Jeremiah Smith has been added to the Biletnikoff Award watchlist

Because Smith has been so good so far this season, he has been added to the Biletnikoff Award midseason watchlist. That award is given to the best receiver in college football. Marvin Harrison Jr. won it last year in a landslide. Now, Smith is trying to be a back-to-back winner for Ohio State.

Everything Smith has done so far this season has been spectacular. The only bad thing he's done so far is get called for offensive pass interference on the final drive of that Oregon game. That penalty pushed them them out of field goal range and cost them the game.

Still, as a true freshman, there's not much more the Buckeyes can ask from him. Ohio State needs him to continue to be one of the best players on the field. He has been a matchup nightmare. If he keeps this up, he has a real shot to win this prestigious award.
