During spring practice, the talk of the entire Ohio State football program was how Legend Bey looked. The true freshman was the most exciting player on the field for most of spring. Unfortunately for him, he was not able to participate in the spring game due to an injury.
With Fall camp starting, the Buckeyes were hoping to see what Bey had in him from the get-go. All of the running backs are now healthy after a rough spring. However, Bey was not out there, and Ryan Day confirmed that it was because Bey was suspended for a violation of team rules.
Legend Bey has a rough start to his Ohi0 State football career
After practice, Day was asked why Bey wasn't out there. Day didn't give any specific details, but he confirmed that Bey wasn't out there because he was suspended. He was out for the first day, and he could be out for further practices in the first week, as well.
This is the most disappointing way for Bey to start his career. While Bo Jackson and Isaiah West are the top two backs on the depth chart, Bey has a chance to be the third back in line. Day mentioned in the spring that they wanted to try to get Bey on the field as a freshman.
However, it seems that Bey is having some problems following the rules. That's a really bad start for a true freshman who has already changed programs once. If he doesn't right the ship quickly, he could see his chances of playing early in his career go out the window.
Without Bey on the field, Day was pleased with what he saw out of Jackson and West early in the first practice. He had a lot of praise for Isaiah West, saying that this is the best that he has looked physically since his injury. The Buckeyes should be fine without Bey.
Arthur Smith will put more emphasis on running the ball
Day has mentioned over the last couple of years that the Buckeyes are at their best when they are able to run the ball effectively. He proved that during the 2024 national championship run when both TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins were key players.
Utilizing both Bo Jackson and West will be key for Ohio State to make sure that each is healthy at the end of the season. Ohio State is aiming to play 16 games this season, so they need their guys to be healthy enough to last that long. Bey would help in that regard.
Arthur Smith is known for producing strong running offenses. From utilizing Derrick Henry to Bijan Robinson to Jaylen Warren, Smith gives the ball to his backs a lot. If Bey can't get his act together, Ja'Kobi Jackson could solidify being that third back on the depth chart.
Ohio State has a deep running back room, so Bey may have cost himself a chance to make an early impression on the coaching staff.
