What else does the Ohio State football team have to do to get some respect? The Buckeyes are the No. 1 team in the country, 8-0 on the year and the Big Ten powerhouse is fresh off a dominant win over the Penn State Nittany Lions at The Shoe.
Ryan Day quote after Ohio State crushed Penn State made the win better
When the polls come out this upcoming week, there's no question the Buckeyes will remain No. 1 in the nation. However, the first College Football Playoff rankings are arriving on Tuesday night and it doesn't seem like a lock that Ryan Day and Co. are going to hold the top spot. That's what ESPN's Joey Galloway mentioned during halftime of Florida vs. Georgia, with the former NFL receiver saying he thinks Indiana could end up with the No. 1 spot in the CFP committee's eyes.
Could Indiana overtake Ohio State football for the No. 1 spot in the CFP rankings?
“I think it is accurate for the AP Poll, but I’m not sure about Tuesday night (the CFP rankings),” Galloway said on Ohio State staying the No. 1 team out there. “Their resume - not great. This Penn State game looked like it was going to be a huge matchup, but Penn State has fallen off.”
Look, we get it. Ohio State's schedule has been pretty dang easy, but no one can deny that they're looking elite. On top of that, is it Ohio State's fault that the other teams on their schedule haven't lived up to the hype and the Buckeyes have barely broken a sweat in taking them down? Nope, not at all.
We get where Galloway is coming from, as a lot of people thought the showdown between the Buckeyes vs. Nittany Lions was going to potentially be a clash of the two top-ranked teams in the game. Instead, Penn State entered the weekend with a 3-4 record and the struggling Big Ten side is now 3-5 thanks to Julian Sayin, Jeremiah Smith and more.
Again, this is out of Ohio State's control. Indiana has been sensational this year and we're not taking anything away from the job Curt Cignetti, Fernando Mendoza and others are doing. The Hoosiers are one of the best stories in college football in 2025.
With that said, the Buckeyes are the reigning national champs, they entered the year No. 1 and they've looked tremendous in winning their first eight games of the campaign. They should be No. 1 in the first CFP rankings coming soon. Period.
