It has not been a smooth start to the Ohio State football career of Legend Bey. He was suspended before practice even began, and he struggled a bit once he got to practice. Now, Bey hasn't played in the last two games and only played one snap against both Texas and Kent State.
Ryan Day has been cryptic as to why he hasn't seen snaps in the last couple of weeks. It looked like he was in the doghouse for issues that happened in practice. Now, some light has been shed on some issues off the field that might be part of the reason why he hasn't seen the field.
Ohio State RB Legend Bey has had some reported issues off the field
According to The Comeback, which is connected to Awful Announcing, Bey has had a couple of problems away from The Shoe. According to the records they pulled, Bey was cited for going 96 mph in a 65 mph zone. That wasn't the only issue that he has allegedly had.
Bey was also allegedly evicted from his apartment complex for not paying his rent in August. This is disturbing, especially since he is receiving thousands of dollars in NIL money. There is no reason why he shouldn't be able to pay rent to the landlord with what he is making.
Perhaps these issues are part of the reason why Day has not put Bey on the field in each of the last two contests. It is unclear if that is the case. However, Bey is still very young. After deciding to get out of his LOI from Tennessee, it's unclear how much his parents are helping him at his new destination.
Regardless of the circumstances, Bey needs to grow up and show some maturity. It's hard to blame Day for benching him to this point if these things are a factor. Bey still needs to build trust with the coaching staff that he is mature enough to handle his business off the field.
Legend Bey can still turn things around at Ohio State
While these are troubling issues early in his career, Bey still has an opportunity to turn things around. He is just 18 years old and clearly has a lot to learn. Having someone around him who can help him navigate what is certainly a difficult transition can go a long way.
Ohio State can still get him on the right track. Of course, Bey needs to be willing and open to making some changes. When he's on the field, he's one of the most dynamic players the Buckeyes have. Keeping him happy and doing well off the field can go a long way to getting that kind of player back on the field.
It's unclear whether or not Bey will play against Maryland. It should be a blowout, so Day will have the opportunity to play him if he desires. Day likely won't be asked any questions about Bey's off-the-field issues. If he is, he will likely deflect. No matter what, let's just hope Bey can mature and learn from the mistakes he has made.
