Jeremiah Smith is one of the most beloved Ohio State football players in modern history. His ability to take over the field as a freshman during the Buckeyes' national title run in 2024 was unlike anything else in history. He was a true game-wrecker that no one could stop.
Smith has also stayed loyal to the Buckeyes despite programs tampering with him. He will go down as perhaps the best receiver in Ohio State history. However, fans might be a bit upset with him after he seemingly called out the atmosphere in the Shoe compared to what Texas will have to offer.
Jeremiah Smith thinks the Texas game could be louder than games at Ohio Stadium
While speaking to CBS Sports, Smith was asked about which game he is most excited for. Smith answered that he is excited for the Week 2 showdown against the Longhorns. He also seemed to think that their atmosphere could get louder than a game at the Shoe.
"I circled (the) Texas game because you hear a lot about their stadium and how loud it gets. And it's our first big away game, so I'm excited for it. I think it might be louder (than the Shoe), I'm not going to lie. ... It's going to be a crazy atmosphere, and it's at nighttime, so it's going to be rocking for sure."
While this could be interpreted as a shot at Ohio State fans, it's more of a shot at FOX. Most of Ohio State's big home games are noon kickoffs because of FOX. It's hard for fans to be very excited that early in the day. The atmosphere isn't as charged when the sun is still shining.
This is why fans have been advocating for more home night games. Quite frankly, any time is better than noon. That is the biggest issue for Ohio State football fans. Smith loves Ohio State fans too much to actually think they are a weaker crowd than what Texas has.
Ohio State has enough talent to take down Texas in Week 2
In any case, the Buckeyes have their work cut out for them once Week 2 rolls around. This could end up being the second-hardest game they play this season, only behind Indiana. The Longhorns will end up being a top-three team in the preseason polls, with Ohio State being number one in the Coaches Poll.
Playing on the road in Austin in a night game will not be easy. But they have the talent necessary to get out of there with a win. Smith hasn't had the most success against Texas in the last two years, but Julian Sayin is a much better quarterback this time around.
The Buckeyes should be able to run the ball with more vigor this year, too. Last season in the Shoe, Ohio State relied on its defense to shut down Arch Manning and Texas' offense. However, with as much talent as they have lost on that side of the ball, they might have to rely more on their offense.
