Carnell Tate's first call after being drafted shouldn't surprise anyone

Cam Ward wanted to make sure he was among the first to congratulate his new Tennessee Titans teammate

The Tennessee Titans expect Carnell Tate to be their top wide receiver, so it makes sense that the former Buckeye got in touch with his new quarterback immediately.

Cam Ward, who the Titans selected with the No, 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, called Tate shortly after the Titans selected the former Buckeye with the fourth pick.

Cam Ward was first to call and congratulate Carnell Tate

There wasn't much to the conversation other than Ward congratulating Tate and the two talking about linking up in the near future and surely having a longer discussion. Tate was the first of four Buckeyes to be picked in the top 11 picks of the draft. There was plenty of speculation about where in the top ten Tate would land and if the Titans would use that high pick to select a major weapon for Ward.

Titans GM Mike Borgonzi said that picking Tate at No. 4 was a no-brainier and said that the wide receiver is exactly what Ward needs in a top target.

“Well, he’s a bigger, vertical guy. The route running, very efficient, his route running,” Borgonzi said. “I thought he had exceptional ball skills to be able to track the footballs, catch radius downfield. I think he’s going to be a great fit in this offense. He has the ability to play big downfield. That’s the one thing, all these contested catches downfield, his ability to go up and catch the football, contort his body in certain ways. I think it’s going to be great for Cam [Ward].”

After having seven players selected in the top 45 picks last year, it's been another amazing advertisement for Ohio State football in this year's draft. Tate, Arvell Reese (New York Giants), Sonny Styles (Washington Commanders) and Caleb Downs (Dallas Cowboys) were picked in the top 11, but the stream of former Buckeyes hearing their names called continued on day two with three more players selected in the second round. Kayden McDonald went to the Houston Texans at No. 36, Max Klare was picked by the Los Angeles Rams at No. 61 and Davison Igbinosun was selected by the Buffalo Bills at No. 62.

Maybe next year the NFL will just decide to hold the draft in Columbus.
