Ohio State Football: Three coaches OSU should hire right now
No. 3) Joe Rudolph, Offensive line coach, Notre Dame
It is time for Ohio State to upgrade its offensive line and it starts at the top with its coach. I think Justin Frye is a solid coach, but he is not getting it done in recruiting in terms of adding incoming freshmen and players from the portal. The two offensive linemen the Buckeyes were able to get in last off-season’s transfer portal were a San Diego State right tackle and a backup center from UL-Monroe.
Take into account that he has swung and missed on every top-100 recruit he’s tried to get and it’s clear that Frye is not getting the job done. And let’s face the facts, this past year’s offensive line play was the worst I’ve seen it since 2011.
Ohio State should have college football’s best coaches on staff and Joe Rudolph is just that. Known around coaching circles as somebody who knows how to recruit and coach them up. Notre Dame has had excellent offensive line play the past few seasons under his watch.
The 51-year-old from Charleroi, Pennsylvania would add a ton of coaching experience to the staff, something they lack right now, especially on offense. Rudolph has had stops at Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Pitt, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and yes, Ohio State. He was a grad assistant in Columbus from 2004 to 2006 under Jim Tressel.
Rudolph even has some head coaching experience, serving as Pitt’s interim head coach in 2014. Rudolph would be a home run hire and somebody who would whip this offensive line into shape.
