No. 2) James Laurinaitis, Grad Assistant, Ohio State

This one seems pretty easy to me. Ryan Day and Jim Knowles need to let James Laurinaitis on this staff full-time for a few reasons. First, Laurinaitis needs to be able to hit the road recruiting. He has done an excellent job in recruiting when players get on campus, but he is not allowed to travel as a grad assistant. Let this man hit the recruiting trail and I guarantee he will do a tremendous job.

Secondly, the balance of this coaching staff is out of whack. With only four defensive assistants, compared to the offense’s five, if you count Ryan Day, it does not make any sense. For a team with an offensive-minded head coach, the defense must get more assistance.

Third, Day should want to make Laurinaitis a full-time assistant before anyone else comes knocking to snatch him up. It would not be a surprise if Notre Dame and Marcu Freeman have already not offered to make Laurinaitis a full-time coach on their staff. Day better act this offseason, or they will risk the potential of losing him.

And with Parker Fleming eating up a coaching position, this just makes too much sense to let Laurinaitis take his position on staff to coach the linebackers. It would be easy for Ryan Day to assign every coach a unit on special teams, or even bring in a grad assistant to oversee it.
