Ohio State Football: Lou Holtz stands by calling OSU out
By Ryan Stano
We all saw what kind of reaction Ryan Day had in the aftermath of the Ohio State football team’s win over Notre Dame on Saturday night. The emotion he showed after the Buckeyes won the game was something we haven’t really seen out of him in his coaching career.
For those who didn’t know, Day came out and torched Lou Holtz for saying that the Ohio State football team was not a tough team and that’s why they were going to lose to Notre Dame on Saturday night. That was clearly a source of motivation for him and his team.
Holtz has now come out and apologized to Marcus Freeman for those comments, but does not regret them. In an appearance on Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakitch, Holtz seemed to double down on his comments and said that Ohio State still isn’t a great football team.
I’m not really sure how Holtz can watch that game Saturday night and believe that. What the Buckeyes did in a hostile environment took real guts and toughness. It took a lot for this team to beat a Notre Dame team that Holtz still seems to think is great.
Yet, Holtz is 86 years old and is just a fan now. He no longer works on TV or is coaching a program or anything like that. It makes sense that he would still back Notre Dame after having coached them for so long. I’m just surprised he can’t change his mind after what he just saw.
I guess you can’t change a man’s mind who hasn’t been around the game in so long. Day won’t care any further about Holtz or Notre Dame anymore. He did what he needed to do in South Bend and it’s on to the next victim. Maryland is on the docket to be that next victim in a couple of weeks.
