The Ohio State football team has a defense that is clearly trustworthy. We saw that on Saturday night when the Buckeyes held Notre Dame to just 14 points. More than that, they held Sam Hartman to just 175 yards through the air and didn’t allow any big plays.

A big reason for that success has been the play of the secondary. Everyone has really stepped up their game. Lathan Ransom is one of the guys as a safety who has been really good to start the season. He was good last year too, earning Honorable Mention All-Big Ten.

On Saturday night, he showed why he is the best safety the Ohio State football team has right now. He led the team in tackles with 13, almost doubling up the next closest player. It’s not always the best thing to have your safety as your leading tackler, but it was the case on Saturday.

The reason why it’s not worrisome to me is because Ransom was all over the field. He was doing well in pass coverage as well as coming up to stop the run. He was the player that the Buckeyes decided to move all around the field so he could make plays.

Because of those efforts, he was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. He will be able to pick up more honors later this season if he keeps playing like he did over the weekend. He has the talent to be a really good player and the linchpin of this secondary unit.

Ransom and the rest of the Buckeyes will get a chance to rest this weekend during the bye week. It’s well-earned after that hard-fought victory in South Bend. This team might be a defensive team this year instead of the high-flying offensive one we’ve seen for the last few years.
