#2 J.K. Dobbins – single-season rushing yards

J.K. Dobbins was forced to start as a freshman in 2017 after former starting running back Mike Weber suffered an injury. Dobbins never relinquished the starting position despite splitting carries with Weber for two seasons. There were plenty of ups and downs over the course of his three years, but his junior season in 2019 was one for the ages. Dobbins finished the year with 2,003 yards after rushing the rock 301 times and scoring 21 rushing touchdowns.

Dobbins’ 2,003 yards were good enough to break the all-time Ohio State football single-season rushing record which had previously been held by Heisman-winning running back Eddie George. George finished with 1,927 yards in 1995. His record stood for 24 years before Dobbins was able to break it and be the first rusher to go over 2,000 yards in a single season in school history.

#1 J.T. Barrett – career total offensive yards

It’s no secret that I have a love/hate relationship with J.T. Barrett. I loved his gamesmanship, his leadership, and his ability to just win. But I also thought he was holding the Ohio State offense back, which was kind of proven true in 2014 when after being injured against That Team Up North, Cardale Jones stepped in and not only sealed the deal against the Wolverines but then went on a three-game streak that will no one day be made into a Rudy-like movie.

That shouldn’t take away the fact that Barrett has etched his name into the Ohio State record books forever. He practically owns every major career record for a quarterback with the Ohio State football program, but that can be explained away by the large number of games he was able to play in over the course of his five-year career in Columbus, Ohio.

Despite those arguments, no one has ever moved the football, whether by air or on the ground, better than J.T., who finished his career with the Ohio State football program with 12,697 yards, breaking Braxton Miller’s record of 8,950 yards. Interestingly enough, Miller was the quarterback Barrett replaced in 2014 when Braxton suffered a second injury to his throwing arm during the pre-season.

Before Barrett and Miller, the record was held by Art Schlichter who finished with 8,850 yards in 1981. The record stood for 34 years until Miller broke it and Barrett smashed it. This might be the most improbable record in the Ohio State record books besides Archie Griffin’s career rushing yards record of 5,589 yards, which has stood for 48 seasons.
