Do you remember the 2015 Ohio State football team? That team was the first team to be named the consensus number-one team in the country in the preseason polls. They were coming off the memorable national championship run in 2014 where they used three quarterbacks.

Coming into 2015, the big question was who was going to be the quarterback for the season. We knew Braxton Miller couldn’t throw anymore, so it was really between J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones. Barrett led the team all of 2014 before getting hurt and allowing Jones to go on that epic three-game run.

We know what happened. Urban Meyer played musical chairs with both quarterbacks and couldn’t make a decision until late in the season. The Buckeyes ended up losing to Michigan State in the second-to-last game of the season to a backup QB and lost out on a shot to go to the CFP.

Speaking on the Buckeye Show on 97.1 the Fan, Tyvis Powell, starting safety on that 2015 team, said that the offense was not happy with how things were going. In fact, he mentioned that after the Northern Illinois game, the receivers were brought in with the coaches for a vote.

That vote was for who they thought should be the starting quarterback. Powell mentions that 9 out of the 10 receivers in the room voted for Barrett, and that’s why he was the starter the rest of the season. The receivers wanted Barrett over Jones because they thought the offense moved better.

I always thought that Barrett should have started from the beginning. It was clear that for whatever reason, the offense moved better with him at the helm. Jones just couldn’t recapture the magic he had during that run to the national title.

It’s interesting to me that the receivers had to vote for this decision to be made. It’s also interesting that they too thought Barrett should’ve been leading the team. Quite frankly, it was the biggest reason why the offense never fully clicked that season. But Tim Beck was still the reason they didn’t repeat as national champs.
