Ohio State Buckeyes: Men’s tennis team falls short of national title
By Ryan Stano
We told you yesterday about the men’s tennis team playing today for a national championship. The Ohio State Buckeyes took on the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers today for the title. Coming into today, the Buckeyes were 34-2 in matches and had just swept TCU in the semifinals.
Unfortunately, the Buckeyes fell short today by just one match. They were not able to win the first national championship in men’s tennis history. It was tough for them to just come up a single match short of winning it all, but they still had a great season.
Having the Ohio State Buckeyes lose to the defending national champions shouldn’t diminish their season. They still had the best season in program history. Losing to a team as good as Virginia is nothing to be ashamed of, even if they did fall short of the ultimate goal.
Again, I’m not an expert in tennis. But I know that losing to the defending national champions in any sport is nothing to be ashamed of. If the Buckeyes were this good this season, they should be pretty darn good again next season even after losing some seniors.
Winning 34 of your 36 matches in the regular season and then making the national championship sounds like a darn good season to me. I know the tennis team is really good indoors too. Hopefully, they can play as well indoors as they did outdoors this season.
As always, we will cover all Ohio State sports and will let you know about big events with some of the smaller ones.
