The Ohio State football team plays at Bloomington, Indiana in Week 1. Here is what you need to know about the Hoosiers heading into 2023.

The Ohio State football team will be breaking in a new starting quarterback when they enter the Indiana game in Week 1. The most likely starter remains to be Kyle McCord. However, that will play out during fall camp.

Indiana head coach Tom Allen had this program humming in 2020 with a Heisman-level quarterback in Michael Pennix Jr. Since that season, it’s been all downhill for Allen and the Hoosiers. Pennix has since transferred to Washington, where he is still a Heisman candidate, and they also lost their most highly-rated recruit ever in linebacker Dasan McCullough, who has since transferred to Oklahoma.

This should be a good game for head coach Ryan Day, offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, and whoever the quarterback will be to get on the same page. I’m assuming that half the crowd will be Buckeye fans, so this probably won’t be a true road test.

Indiana is 2-16 in Big Ten play since 2021, the worst in the conference. And with a subpar recruiting class in 2022 and 2023 alike, that probably won’t change anytime soon.

Offensively, Indiana will be starting Dexter Williams II or Brendan Sorsby at quarterback. Williams might not even suit up for Week 1 as he’s still getting back from a knee injury while Sorsby, the redshirt freshman, appeared in just one game last season against Penn State where he only attempted six passes. The Buckeye defense should feast.

Defensively, the Hoosiers should be a little better than they were in 2022 when they gave up 56 points to Ohio State. Maybe? They brought in transfer defensive end Andre Carter from Western Michigan where he had 68 tackles and seven sacks.

Tom Allen is very excited about him, via SI.com:

"“He’s the biggest, most physical one we’ve had here since I’ve been here and very, very disruptive.”"

I don’t know if he could have that same sort of impact in the Big Ten, but at least the new Ohio State offensive tackles will see a little bit of a challenge during their first game. Overall, the Ohio State football team should roll in this game. It will be a great way to get the younger guys some experience and hopefully, it’s a good launching-off point for either McCord or Devin Brown at quarterback.
