There are just 10 days left before the Ohio State football team plays its annual Spring Game. When that game is played, we will find out who takes the first snap at quarterback. Ryan Day has mentioned multiple times that while he wishes someone would stand out, no one has yet.

The battle between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown is something that Buckeye fans have been watching closely. McCord is still the favorite to win the job because he’s spent two full years in this offensive system and has even started a game before. Brown has yet to make a start.

McCord also has built-in chemistry with Marvin Harrison Jr. from their time in high school together as teammates. That’s a big boost for him. So what would it take for Brown to ultimately win the starting job over McCord? There’s one big factor that is in his favor.

That factor is decision-making. The single biggest reason why McCord lost out to C.J. Stroud in the 2021 battle is that McCord tried to fit too many balls into tight places. He has an extremely strong arm but he trusts it too much. He didn’t protect the ball enough.

Brown has a reputation for taking care of the ball better and not having as many turnovers. If he can prove to Ryan Day that he will play smarter and not throw too many interceptions, he has a chance to take the leap ahead of McCord for the starting job.

This is a battle that won’t be decided after the Spring Game. My guess is that it will go into the first week or two of Fall camp. I still think McCord has the upper hand right now, but that doesn’t mean Brown can’t close that gap with a strong finish this Spring.
