Ohio State Football: OSU’s two top Heisman candidates
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has had Heisman finalists in four of the last five seasons, including in 2019 when they had two fo them. While no Buckeye has won the award since Troy Smith in 2006, that doesn’t mean that they haven’t been really close.
At this point, it seems that every year the Buckeyes will have at least a finalist. The Buckeyes have at least two guys that could be considered as favorites to be finalists for the Heimsan this year, even though one of them has only started one collegiate game.
The obvious candidate is Marvin Harrison Jr. He is the best receiver in the country and is the best player that Ohio State has on their roster. Even though only two receivers have ever won the Heisman, Harrison Jr. is good enough to be added to that exclusive list.
The other candidate is the guy throwing to him. It will most likely be Kyle McCord, although Devin Brown still has a legitimate shot to challenge him. Whichever quarterback wins the job will likely put up fantastic numbers and be invited to New York as a Finalist.
Any quarterback that Ryan Day puts out on the field is going to be a candidate for the Trophy because of they type of offense that they play. Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, and C.J. Stroud were all Finalists under Day’s offense with the Ohio State football program.
These are the top two candidates, but that doesn’t mean someone else can’t emerge. TreVeyon Henderson certainly has a shot if he returns healthy and wins the number one running back job over Miyan Williams. Williams has a shot too if he stays healthy and gets the starting job.
Only time will tell on who has a good enough season to be considered a Finalist at the end.
