Ohio State basketball lands another transfer
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State basketball team has used the transfer portal often under Chris Holtmann. Since the portal has become available to players, Holtmann has not been shy about looking for players in it. It’s a tool to use for coaches, so it’s one he might as well use right?
Holtmann and his staff have just landed another transfer, this time a guard. It’s the second transfer the Buckeyes have gotten in the last couple of weeks. This time its guard Dale Bonner who comes in from the transfer portal via the way of Baylor.
Bonner is from Shaker Heights, Ohio so he is a native kid. He played three years with the Bears and came off the bench for them every year. Last season, he averaged 4.7 points per game, but shot 44% from the field and 37% from three. He’s known more for his defense.
Bonner averaged 1.4 steals a game last season. He’s someone that can defend on the perimeter and make it tough for opposing point guards to get by. He averaged 2.7 assists as well so he can pass the ball a little bit too. Bonner stands at 6’2 and 170 pounds so he has decent size.
Looking at the rest of the Buckeye’s roster, it’s tough to determine whether or not Bonner will start. If he does, it will be alongside Bruce Thornton. What this does do is signal that Bronny James is definitely not coming to Ohio State. There’s no room for him now.
The Ohio State basketball program is looking to bounce back after a terrible year. Grabbing Bonner helps them get deeper at guard and gives them some experience, which is desperately needed with such a young team. I’m interested to see how he is used by Holtmann next year.
