Ohio State Football: Two things we learned from Spring Game
The Ohio State football team took part in the annual Spring Game yesterday in Ohio Stadium. Here are two things we learned.
It was a great day on Saturday in Columbus for the Ohio State football team and its fans for the annual Spring Game. The weather was perfect, and the state of Ohio showed up with 75,000 strong. I was in attendance for the event, and it was truly a perfect time to take the family and enjoy all that Ohio State has to offer. From the Stadium itself to Buckeye Grove, the tailgating, and our favorite stop at Buckeye Donuts, it was a perfect day to enjoy all that the surroundings have to offer.
But there was a scrimmage that took place, and it did tell us a few things about this team. First and foremost, yesterday told us that the running back room is completely healthy and ready to go in 2023. All five backs participated in pre-game drills and looked sharp, even though TreVeyon Henderson and Evan Pryor were held out of the scrimmage.
This is huge considering the fact that Ryan Day was forced to play Xavier Johnson serious snaps in the College Football Playoffs at the tailback position. If Ohio State indeed wants to get back there, then they will need to lean on the running game more this year as they help break in a new starting quarterback. Hopefully these guys can stay healthy all offseason and we can see what this group has to offer.
The other thing that we learned on Saturday was that Kyle McCord did not win the job during the scrimmage. I believe a great showing from McCord would have put the nail in the coffin on this quarterback battle. But McCord left the door ajar for Devin Brown to comeback from his injury and still win the job. McCord did not look crisp and easily could have had a few interceptions.
But I’m still not worried. Its Spring, not Fall as it’s hard to judge how a quarterback is fairing in a scrimmage like this. A few years back it was Justin Fields that didn’t look great in the 2019 Spring Game and that turned out just fine.
So, even though the offense was not at its best we still learned a few things on Saturday. Hopefully, this Buckeye team can take the positives and learn from the negatives as they go into the summer months.
