Ohio State Football: Spring Game reactions
By Ryan Stano
I watched the Ohio State football team play its Spring Game and was hoping to learn about how good the Buckeyes were going to be on offense. I really wanted to see how Kyle McCord threw the ball knowing that he was going to be the only one getting first-team reps.
Yet, I came away underwhelmed when watching the first-team offense. Sure, they didn’t have a full complement of wide receivers that they would normally have. TreVeyon Henderson was also out at running back. But I left wanting more out of the offense.
McCord didn’t look sharp. He had some good moments but had a lot more bad than good. I won’t say I’m worried about him being the starting quarterback yet but I’m not thrilled with what I saw. I was expecting him to be sharper having been in the program as long as he has.
The defensive line looked good. That was something that was encouraging to see. The secondary also didn’t give up any big plays, which is a plus. That’s something that is an improvement. If the secondary can keep that up heading into the season, this team can be pretty good.
I didn’t think the offense was going to be quite that bad, but it’s also still the Spring. The quarterback battle is certainly not sewn up though like I thought it was. Devin Brown is still very much in the mix for that job once he gets his finger healthy.
The coaches will have to look at how each of them does in practice and make a determination on which one will lead the team better. The offense has a standard that they have to live up to based on the last few years. Hopefully, it can hit that standard.
