Ohio State Football: It’s time to look in portal for OT
The Ohio State football team held its annual Spring game in Ohio Stadium yesterday. Its time start looking at other options for offensive tackle.
The Ohio State football team held its Spring game in Ohio Stadium yesterday in front of over 75,000 fans. The Buckeyes had good moments and some moments that made you question the progression of certain units. At the top of that list is the offensive line.
Granted it was just one Spring Game which essentially was a glorified practice for Ohio State. But I have to be honest that I did not like what I saw from the offensive tackle positions. The quarterbacks were pressured on just about every drop back and instead of seeing Kyle McCord and Tristan Gebbia throw the ball down the field we saw them running to avoid a sack and either pick up a few yards rushing or throwing it away.
The coaching staff has to see that this team could be special next year. The weapons on offense are second to none and the defense under second-year coordinator Jim Knowles looks like can be vastly improved. They have to provide whoever the starting quarterback is with an opportunity to grow into the position and that will be difficult if he’s running for his life.
I think Josh Fryar is fine although he is best suited to play right tackle. He’s playing left tackle right now because there is no one else to play that position. Right tackle is a mess. I was truly hoping we’d see Zen Michalski or Tegra Tshabola step up and claim a spot, but they haven’t.
Ryan Day owes it to his team to not have the 2023 Ohio State football season ruined by poor offensive line play when there is something he can do about it. The Spring transfer window will be opening soon. Offensive tackles around the country who want to play for a national championship have to see what’s happening at Ohio State with eyes wide open. Day needs to find a starting tackle in the portal.
As much as I want to see the young guys emerge, it just doesn’t appear that they are ready yet. And with a game at Notre Dame so early in the season, Day and his coaching staff have no room to play guessing games. They need an established player that they can depend on. That the starting quarterback can depend on. And that the football team as a whole can depend on before it’s too late.
