Ohio State Football: QB battle seems to be wrapped up
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has battles going on all over the roster right now. No battle is more high-profile than the quarterback battle. That battle is between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown. It seems just a few days before the Spring Game that the battle is now wrapped up.
That’s because of an injury that Brown sustained to a finger on this throwing hand. He just underwent a procedure on that finger and he will not play in the Spring Game this Saturday. The Buckeyes are under the control of McCord as far as first-ream reps go.
Missing the Spring Game is a huge blow to Brown’s chances to win this job. This was going to be his big chance to play in front of a crowd in a simulated game atmosphere and show that he can handle it. Now, he’s going to miss that opportunity.
McCord was already considered the favorite heading into the Spring Game anyway, but this pretty much wraps up the battle. It’s going to be next to impossible for Brown to make up the ground that he’s going to lose in the Spring Game. The reps that McCord is going to get are invaluable.
I think this is the right move anyway. I think McCord is the better player at the moment. If he has a good year this season, he will leave for the NFL and then Brown will have the upper hand at winning the job next season. That seems to be the ideal scenario for this current Ohio State football team.
I’m bummed I won’t get to see Brown play on Saturday. I was looking forward to seeing what he could do with a full offseason of work. Hopefully, he can get that finger healthy and really push McCord in the Fall. Competition is always healthy!
