Ohio State basketball: Chris Holtmann denies involvement with other schools
By Ryan Stano
With the ending of the Ohio State basketball team’s season on Saturday, we have entered a very interesting offseason for the Buckeyes. It’s an offseason that will see some significant roster turnover and a highly-touted recruiting class come in.
There were rumors floating around that the offseason could include a change at head coach, although not by Ohio State’s doing. There was a report from Dick Weiss at the New York Daily News that Notre Dame was close to hiring Holtmann as their head coach.
If you remember, Holtmann previously denied these rumors that popped up earlier this season. He said that he was firmly committed to the university and the Ohio State basketball program moving forward. He reiterated that stance today talking to ABC 6’s Clay Hall.
I’m not sure that I believe that Notre Dame would want Holtmann to come to South Bend. I understand he has Indiana ties having coached at Butler and gone to Taylor University, but he is coming off his worst season as a head coach. It’s hard to believe his stock could be any lower.
Add the fact that Holtmann’s buyout is even too expensive for Ohio State to consider firing him makes it even more unlikely that Notre Dame would pay that amount to hire him. But, this isn’t the first time these rumors have popped up this season. Maybe where there’s smoke, there’s fire?
With Holtmann shutting down these reports today, I think we can put these rumors to bed for good.
