The Ohio State basketball team might be looking for a new head coach this offseason with rumors coming about that Chris Holtman might leave.

The Ohio State basketball team has had its worst season in decades. And with Athletic Director Gene Smith and head coach Chris Holtmann both wanting to save face, Holtmann taking another job might be best for all parties involved.

These rumors have started to swirl as 92.3 The Fan radio host Anthony Lima in Cleveland suggested that he’s heard Holtman might take a lateral move to a school such as Notre Dame, which will be looking for a new head coach as Mike Brey is set to retire.

This notion was also insinuated by Doug Lemerise of Cleveland.com in a recent article, suggesting that a move to another school would be best for both Holtmann and Ohio State. He went on to say that Ohio State would owe Holtmann north of $20 million if he were to be fired, something that would definitely halt Smith from outright canning him.

Taking a step back from the situation and looking at it from 20,000 feet up, this makes the most sense. Holtmann is starting to crack under public criticism and his team has not responded to him at all. The latest was a disastrous loss to Penn State in front of nearly a half-capacity crowd at Value City Arena.

To be honest though, I’m not sure why a school like Notre Dame would be interested in Chris Holtmann. He’s proven that he can’t get the job done in this new era of one and done’s and having to navigate the transfer portal.

But as public pressure mounts on both Gene Smith and Chris Holtmann, the timing would be perfect for them to save face, part ways, and avoid another chance at a repeat season like this one next year.
