Interesting offseason incoming for Ohio State basketball
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State basketball team’s season ended on Saturday after they fell to top-seeded Purdue in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. It was a game that they led early, but a 21-5 run to end the first half by Purdue doomed the Buckeyes’ chances to pull an upset.
There will be no postseason for Ohio State this year. So now, an interesting offseason is upon us. Chris Holtmann will be back next season, that much is certain. What is uncertain is who else will be coming back to the Ohio State basketball team next year.
Brice Sensabaugh could be headed to the NBA last season depending on the kind of grade he gets when he inquires over the summer. He will certainly look to leave if he will be a lottery pick. He still might even go just as long as he gets a first-round grade.
Who else from the 2022 recruiting class will be back? With a 2023 class that has four recruits in it now, and possibly a fifth, there’s not a lot of room on the roster. We could see someone like Bowen Hardman, who didn’t play at all this year, head somewhere else.
The transfer portal in college basketball is extremely active every year. Heck, Ohio State got two transfers last year that played on this year’s team. Someone like Eugene Brown could opt to hop in the portal and look for somewhere else to go where he would get more playing time.
I’m very interested to see what this roster looks like when October rolls around. I want to see who stays and who is potentially brought in. Holtmann could use the portal again to bring in some veteran leadership, even if that didn’t exactly work this season.
For now, Buckeye fans can watch March Madness without any stress and we can just enjoy the wonders of the NCAA Tournament.
