It was a fun run while it lasted. The Ohio State basketball team won three games in three days to make the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. They were able to beat Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan State to save their season. Unfortunately, they couldn’t win today against Purdue, falling 80-66.

Purdue has a chance to be a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament, so it was always going to be a tall order to beat the Boilermakers. The Buckeyes did almost beat them in the Schott earlier this year but ended up losing that one at the end of the game.

Zach Edey was the big issue for the Buckeyes. He got Ohio State in foul trouble at the end of the first half and they weren’t able to recover. He did seem to get every call down low though. The referees did the Buckeyes no favors. Regardless, Edey had a double-double and finished with 31 points.

Roddy Gayle had the best game of his young career. He had 20 points and made five three-pointers. He was one of the reasons Ohio State had a lead in the first half of this game. Unfortunately, a big run by Purdue at the end of the first half really did the Buckeyes in.

The Boilermakers finished the first half on a 21-5 run to take an 8-point lead into the locker room. That was too much for the Buckeyes to overcome and they never threatened after that. Not having Brice Sensabaugh really hurt them. They needed a guy who can make tough shots in this game.

An overall disappointing season ends now for Ohio State. You have to give the team credit for being able to fight hard to try to save their season. Unfortunately, losing 14 of 15 won’t get you into March Madness. Hopefully, things are better next year.
