Ohio State football: Former Michigan OC is back in the Big Ten
The Ohio State football team will see a familiar foe back in the Big Ten. Josh Gattis has been hired by the Maryland Terrapins.
The Ohio State football team will welcome former Michigan Wolverine offensive coordinator Josh Gattis back to the Big Ten when they face off against the Maryland Terrapins on October 7th in Columbus.
Gattis, who thought he was in line to replace Jim Harbaugh as head coach of Michigan if Harbaugh received the Minnesota Vikings job in 2022, left the program unceremoniously once he returned. The bad blood spilled over to the players as Gattis texted his former Wolverine players that he couldn’t stay in a place where he wasn’t wanted.
Gattis is credited with modernizing Michigan’s lackluster offense in 2021 and as a major reason for its success against Ohio State that November. Gattis was calling plays at Miami this past season, but things didn’t work out well for him there as he was ousted after the season ended.
Gattis is returning to the Big Ten to coach with Mike Locksley at Maryland, where the two of them were assistants under Nick Saban and Alabama from 2017-2018. Both are very good offensive coaches and excellent recruiters. He is expected to get the title of offensive coordinator although it appears that Locksley will remain calling plays for the Terrapins.
The only real area where this could impact Ohio State is on the recruiting trail where Gattis is known to be a top-notch recruiter. He also has many mid-west ties from not only his time in Ann Arbor but also dating back to when he was an assistant for James Franklin at Penn State.
Gattis will see his old boss, Jim Harbaugh on November 18th in College Park. That should be an intriguing game to watch, to say the least.
