The Ohio State football program is in a lot better shape than its rival Michigan. Bad news keeps hitting the Wolverines this offseason.

The Ohio State football program should thank its lucky stars that it has an adult leading the program. For all the whining we do about Ryan Day’s playcalling or whatnot, we should be thankful that a man with integrity is leading the program in Columbus.

While Michigan has two straight playoff berths and wins over the Buckeyes, their program appears to be holding on for dear life. For two straight offseasons, the leader of the Wolverine program, Jim Harbaugh, has been openly seeking out NFL opportunities. This is a little befuddling due to the fact that he said he was done sneaking around NFL teams after he failed to land the Minnesota Vikings job last year.

It got so weird in Ann Arbor that its talented offensive coordinator said the heck with this, I’m out of here. Josh Gattis abruptly left Michigan and took the Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator position. Some may even say that Gattis took a step down to get out of dodge.

Then came the Mazi Smith case this past season where Smith was driving around with a gun in his truck, not having a concealed-weapon permit. This was out of Harbaugh’s control. You can’t control what every player does in their spare time. But this happened in-season, and Jim Harbaugh said himself that he knew about it and did not suspend Smith.

But the icing on the cake is what could be shaking out in Ann Arbor right now with the new offensive coordinator, Matt Weiss. According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Weiss is the subject of a legal investigation that deals with “computer access crimes” that occurred at the team’s football facility.

Now I’m not going to speculate on what that could mean. There are enough internet rumors swirling about on this one and I will not be a part of it. But rest assured that this has the potential to bring the Michigan football program to its knees.

Ohio State football fans should feel lucky about having leaders such as Ryan Day and Gene Smith at the head of things in Columbus. It could be way worse, just look at Ann Arbor.
