Ohio State football: Buckeye linebacker moves to RB for stretch run
The Ohio State football team took another season-ending loss to its running back room this week. Linebacker Chip Trayanum will fill in.
The Ohio State football team’s running back situation just got a little bit scarier as fourth-string back TC Caffey went down with a long-term injury this week. This follows the season-ending injury suffered by redshirt freshmen Evan Pryor in fall camp.
And with both Miyan Williams and TreVeyon Henderson sitting out games this season with injuries, the depth chart at running back is looking slim. This is why Ryan Day announced on Tuesday that transfer linebacker Chip Trayanum will be moving to the running back room for the remainder of the season.
Trayanum started his career at Arizona State as a tailback and has 672 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing in his two seasons as a Sun Devil. Ohio State recruited him as a linebacker out of high school so once they saw his name in the transfer portal last offseason, they scooped him up to play there.
Luckily for the Buckeyes, Trayanum was very open to playing running back according to Day, via Eleven Warriors:
"“Chip had really come to us a couple of weeks ago and said, ‘Hey, listen. If you need anything on offense. I’m here for you,’ which is the way he is. He’s an unbelievable person and has a great attitude.”"
It’s great to have players like Trayanum who can move positions when needed and are selfless in giving to the team. Cade Stover has done it in the past flipping between linebacker and tight end a few different times in his Ohio State career.
It sounds like Day just wants to be prepared in case of another blow at the running back position. And with so much depth at linebacker, it might make sense for Trayanum as well. With an experienced Power Five tailback such as Chip Trayanum already on its roster, the Buckeyes are very lucky to have him.
