Former Ohio State Football player wins QB battle
By Ryan Stano
Former Ohio State football player Quinn Ewers transferred out of the program last year after sitting one season on the bench. He only came to Ohio State to collect close to $1 million in NIL money before returning home where he enrolled at Texas.
Ewers is the highest-rated recruit in Ohio State football history. He was widely expected to win the starting quarterback job for the Longhorns in the Spring and even heading into Fall camp. Something was thought to have changed though, and it was for the worse for him.
There were rumors Ewers was no longer the favorite for the job. Hudson Card, a sophomore who threw for 5 touchdowns and 1 interception a year ago, appeared to be in line to get the job. This would have been a stunning turn of events for someone who has been as hyped up as Ewers was out of high school.
Of course, we learned today that that wasn’t the case. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian named Ewers the starter for the Longhorns. He wins the job that he was expected to win all along, despite some Texas and Ohio State fans convinced that someone else was going to.
When Ewers was with the Buckeyes, he had no shot to win the starting job. He didn’t re-classify to be able to join the Buckeyes until later in the Summer, so he had no chance to compete for the job. Ultimately, C.J. Stroud won the job and had a monster year. After that, Stroud was going to start in 2022 as well, leaving Ewers without an opportunity to start.
Ewers definitely thought he was going to start this season at Texas and he did what he needed to do to win the job. He’s clearly got the purest talent on the roster at the quarterback position. It makes sense that he did indeed win the job.
I saw someone on Twitter liken Ewers to Tate Martell. Clearly, that comparison has turned out to be wrong.
