Why Ohio State football can still catch Notre Dame in recruiting rankings
By Ryan Stano
For most of this year, the Ohio State football program has gone back and forth with Notre Dame for the top spot in the recruiting rankings for the 2023 class. Now, the Buckeyes are in third after Alabama passed them as well. Notre Dame still sits in that top spot.
Yet, the Buckeyes can still catch the Fighting Irish for that top spot. Notre Dame’s class is almost already full as they have 23 commits. Ohio State only has 19 and is looking to have a class of 25 or 26. They still have time to make up that ground if they land some great recruits.
Notre Dame might not be the competition for that top spot anymore though. Alabama might. After the Crimson Tide flipped a Buckeye recruit, they sit at two in the rankings with just 18 commits. They have that off the strength of the four five-star recruits they have so far. Ohio State has just one.
I think the Ohio State football program has a real shot at leapfrogging Notre Dame in the rankings. They are in the running for several four-star prospects that would give them enough points to overtake the Fighting Irish even if they were to get a couple of more kids.
Alabama has the opportunity to get more kids as well. I’m much more worried about jumping them for that top spot than I am Notre Dame. I think there’s a pretty good shot that Bama finishes with the number one ranking and Ohio State finishes second.
No matter what the final ranking is for the Buckeyes, they’ve done a pretty good job recruiting in the 2023 cycle. Tomorrow morning, I’ll give you guys a list of some recruits the Buckeyes are closing in on and have a real shot at landing to close out this class.
