Ohio State Football: ACC Commissioner calls out Big Ten
By Ryan Stano
Coming into the summer, it was expected that the Ohio State football team could play more future non-conference games with the ACC and the Pac 12 as part of the “Alliance” that was made among the three conferences. We now know that won’t be the case.
The Alliance was a sham and the Big Ten decided to add USC and UCLA from the Pac 12. After doing so, the ACC has been scrambling to keep the current members of the conference together and happy. Today, the ACC Commissioner took some shots at the Big Ten.
Jim Phillips, the Commissioner of the ACC had this to say when asked about the Alliance.
As you can see, he’s clearly not happy with the Big Ten blowing up whatever plans he had with the ACC. The ACC is now on less solid footing than the Big Ten and the SEC. While neither of those conferences has said they are looking to expand further, we know that’s a lie.
If a prominent ACC school wanted to leave the conference for either the Big Ten or SEC both conferences would take them in. If Florida State, Clemson, or Miami wanted out, there’s a way they could make it work. It would only increase the value of the conference.
That’s especially true for the Big Ten, who is still in negotiations for their TV deal. Adding USC and UCLA increased the money each team will be getting in a payout each year. Adding another premium brand would increase it even further if it happens before those negotiations are done.
Phillips clearly isn’t happy with what’s happened, but the Big Ten did what was best for its survival.
