The Ohio State football program has played a big part in the conference expansion talks that have been happening the last few weeks. Gene Smith is the most powerful AD in the Big Ten, so you can bet that he was a big influence on the conference adding USC and UCLA.

Once those two programs were added, it sent everyone else in the country scrambling for cover. Everyone had to ensure that the position inside their conference was secure. If it wasn’t they made calls to other conferences about joining theirs instead.

While no other programs have made moves to another conference yet, that doesn’t mean something can’t be in the works. Something may still happen before the end of the summer, or it might not be until next year. One thing is for certain though; the Alliance was a farce.

The Big Ten, ACC, and Pac 12 made this so-called “alliance” after the SEC announced they were adding Texas and Oklahoma. Apparently, those three conferences were supposed to schedule some games together and form a partnership to rival the SEC.

Now that the Big Ten has poached from the Pac 12, we now can see that this was a farce from the moment it was made. Nothing was ever put into writing. It was just a handshake agreement, which meant anyone could break it at any time without any repercussions.

We knew at the time that this “alliance” was never going to be a real thing. It wasn’t going to mean anything substantial. Now we know it meant less than that. It never meant anything at all.
