The Ohio State football team’s 2023 recruiting class has a lot of things. A couple of five-star players and others that are ranked in the top five or ten at their position. There is one thing this class does not have, but I think they very much need: a quarterback.

The Buckeyes currently have three quarterbacks on their roster. C.J. Stroud will leave for the NFL Draft after this season. If Ryan Day does not add a quarterback to this class, he will be forced to try to lure one to his program from the transfer portal. Justin Fields is proof of the success you can have by dipping into the portal, but I’ll still feel an awful lot better if a quarterback addition is made to this recruiting class.

Right now, there appear to be two candidates. The Buckeyes are working hard to flip the commitment of Austin Novosad from Baylor-he’s been committed to them since November of last year. Ohio State is not the only pony in this horserace, though. Texas A&M is a VERY serious contender because that is the alma mater of his parents and is considered his dream school.

Further complicating the matter is he was extended an offer from Notre Dame last week after the Irish lost out on five-star Dante Moore, who chose Oregon. Early last week, the Dripping Springs, Texas native said he wanted to make a decision by the end of the week.

As I predicted in my article about him (read that here), he postponed that decision. On Monday, Novosad talked to Bucknuts and said it will be around two weeks before making he decides. He also said he talks with the Buckeyes very often but makes it clear all three schools are still in it.

Here is another prediction: Novosad won’t be ready to make a decision in two weeks. That’s perfectly okay because you want to see him make the decision when he’s finally completely sure of his choice. He’s the number thirteen quarterback according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings.

The only quarterback the Buckeyes have offered a scholarship, but has not yet committed to anyone is Brock Glenn from Memphis. The eighteenth-ranked Glenn is considered to be heavily leaning towards Florida State and could be close to committing soon.

There are three predictions for him to choose the Seminoles and they have all been given within the last few days. He visited the Ohio State football program in mid-June, just a week after being at FSU. Glenn has also taken official trips to TCU and Auburn. Don’t be surprised if he decides to take a peek at LSU, which has come in with a late offer. I’ll be honest and say I don’t think the Buckeyes are number two right now-Auburn seems to have a stronger chance at this point.

We’re still just over five months from the early signing period, so there is certainly time to add a quarterback to this class. If these two fall through and another viable candidate does not become available, I don’t think you’ll see Day sign any quarterback just to sign one. At that point, I think you’ll see him look to the transfer portal to give this position much-needed depth.
