The Ohio State football program had been slipping in the recruiting rankings for the 2023 class, falling all the way to 8th at one point. It was an odd month or so stretch that saw the Buckeyes not land any commitments. That ranking is no longer correct after today.

That’s because the Buckeyes landed five-star wide receiver Carnell Tate from IMG Academy in Florida. After he made his announcement today, the Buckeyes shot up from 8th all the way up to 2nd. Now, they only sit behind Notre Dame in the rankings for the 2023 class.

This is what I expected from this Ohio State football program. I knew that they would eventually get the recruits that they need to shoot up those rankings. Tate isn’t the only five-star recruit that they were waiting on a commitment from in this cycle. They probably will still get more.

It isn’t surprising that Ryan Day and his staff landed someone like him. Frankly, it would be more surprising if the Buckeyes went an entire recruiting cycle without getting a five-star recruit. I’d also be surprised if they didn’t land multiple five-star guys. That’s just how good they are as a program.

Ohio State will has a shot to jump Notre Dame for the top class. There’s plenty of room in the class for more great prospects to join the program. The Buckeyes only have 11 commits right now. It will probably be a class of 22-25 prospects by the time it’s all said and done.

We’re going to find out how good these prospects end up being in due time. One thing that we do know is that Ohio State continues to recruit at an elite level year in and year out. Ryan Day wants to keep up the tradition of great recruiting that was set up by coaches before him. He’s doing a good job of it.
