Ohio State Football slipping in recruiting rankings
By Ryan Stano
Normally, the Ohio State football program is always near the top of the recruiting rankings every single year. The Buckeyes are one of the top programs in the country because of their recruiting prowess. However, they continue to have a slow start to the 2023 cycle.
The Buckeyes were rated as highly as 3rd in the recruiting rankings at one point. Now, they reside 7th. They continue to slide down the rankings and aren’t even the highest-rated program in their own state. Cincinnati has now jumped to 3rd after amassing 20 commitments.
Ohio State meanwhile, has half that amount. They also sit behind Northwestern and Penn State in terms of Big Ten programs. So does this mean that Ohio State football fans should be concerned about the way Ryan Day and his staff are recruiting thus far this year?
Right now, I’d still say no. Ohio State has the highest recruit ranking average among any team in the country still. That means that their 10 recruits have the highest average ranking among recruiting sites. So clearly they are still getting some high-quality players.
The Buckeyes are also still in the hunt for plenty of excellent prospects who could be committing soon. They’ve yet to lock down a five-star recruit in this cycle, but that could be coming very soon. Carnell Tate is still listed as being a lock for the Buckeyes to land.
Unless we get to the end of July and the Buckeyes are still sitting at just 10 commitments for this class, there’s no reason to be worried quite yet. This is something worth keeping an eye on though. I’m a little surprised they haven’t gotten some more commits.
Day is a great recruiter and so are Brian Hartline and Larry Johnson. Those three alone will be enough to pull in some high-level guys this summer.
