The Ohio State football program was in shock when Dwayne Haskins was killed by a dump truck two months ago. It was a shocking death that no one foresaw. It was something that rocked the entire Ohio State football community, both past and present.
Not a lot of details were released early on about his death and the circumstances around it. We didn’t know why his car was on the side of the highway or why he tried to cross oncoming traffic, or better yet, why an elite athlete wasn’t able to evade a dump truck.
We now have an answer to that question. According to the toxicology report that was released today, Haskins was legally drunk when he was hit. That means he was driving his car at 5:30 am while he was drunk. Because he was drunk, he wasn’t able to evade the dump truck while crossing traffic.
Unfortunately, this is something I had feared when I heard the news. It wouldn’t make sense for him to be out there at that hour of the morning unless there was some sort of substance in his system. There ended up being alcohol in there when this tragedy happened.
At least Ohio State fans weren’t alerted to this news by an insensitive tweet from Adam Schefter this time. The former Buckeye didn’t do himself any favors by this report. I’m sure someone is going to write an insensitive story about him and the circumstances around his death.
This should conclude a sad chapter of Ohio State football news that no one expected to hear, nor wanted to hear.
