Former Ohio State football player Dwayne Haskins was tragically killed over the weekend, as I’m sure you know by now. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the one who broke the news to a lot of people on Twitter. Social media was not happy with his choice of words in his first tweet.

For the next couple of days, no apology was given from Schefter. Not even so much as a “my bad” was given. It seemed that Schefter was going to just ignore it until it blew over. Well, Ohio State football fans, and football fans in general, finally got their wish yesterday.

Schefter tweeted out a blurb from his podcast on Monday. In that podcast, he apologized for his poor choice of words and talked about some good stuff Dwayne had done. That all sounds good on the surface until you really think about why Schefter did what he did.

Schefter didn’t do this right away after his gaffe. He didn’t even do it the same day or even the next day. He had to wait a full 48 hours before he put out any kind of apology. That reeks of disingenuousness. It sounded like he was doing something he was forced to do.

My guess is that the ESPN higher-ups didn’t like all of the backlash that Schefty was getting from that tweet and told him to issue some sort of apology. If Schefter had really felt bad about what he had done, he would have tried to make things right immediately.

Instead, he waited until the storm reached a fever pitch and he was backed into a corner. Then he was left no choice but to apologize to help save some face with current NFL players who were also mad about what had taken place.

This is a bad look that will follow Schefter around for a long time.
