Ohio State basketball: Thad Matta officially head coach of Butler

The Ohio State basketball program took Butler’s coach after they decided to part ways with Thad Matta. Since the 2017-18 season, Chris Holtmann has been in Columbus leading the Buckeyes. Now, Matta is headed back to Butler to lead the Bulldogs.

Matta is now officially the head coach of Butler. The Bulldogs made the decision to fire Lavall Jordan after some disappointing seasons, five in all. He was the pick Butler made to replace Holtmann and it really didn’t work out. Now, they have Matta back.

A couple of days ago, I wrote that this would be the perfect situation for Matta to get back into coaching. He leaves his position with Indiana University as Associate AD and gets back to doing what he truly loves: coaching. He gets to lead a program once more.

From an Ohio State basketball standpoint, this makes Butler much better immediately. Matta has a pedigree of success wherever he has been. The Buckeyes won’t be able to recruit the state of Indiana as well as they may have been able to before, not that they have recruited there very much with Holtmann.

I’m also very happy for Matta but strangely sad at the same time. This is the perfect opportunity for Matta to get back to doing what he loves, which is why I’m happy for him. I’m sad because the Buckeyes had to let him go in the first place, even if it was the right decision.

Holtmann continues to chase the achievements that Matta reached at Ohio State and has yet to reach any of them.
