The Ohio State football team had one of the best offenses in the country last season. They scored the most point and gained the most total yards per game of anyone in the country. They’re going to be pretty good this season too. Suffice to say, they’re a really good offense.

Ohio State’s defense was not nearly as good. They struggled to stop the run at times and had a horrible time tackling. They allowed 600+ yards of total offense against Oregon in a loss and allowed Utah to have 463 in the Rose Bowl too. Suffice to say, they were really bad.

Things seemed to have flipped for the defense so far this Spring. The reports out of Spring practice are that the defense is giving this offense some issues. Apparently, the offense isn’t moving the ball very well against this new defensive scheme. It’s something they are struggling with.

This is great news for Ohio State football fans. No one should be concerned with this offense, except for adding some variability with the run game. The defense is by far the bigger concern. If this defense improves even marginally, the Buckeyes are going to be true national title contenders.

Of course, it’s only Spring practice. No real games or even hard practices have really happened yet. We can’t let these reports go to our heads and make us think that the Buckeyes are all of a sudden going to have a great defense. Most of what we truly need to see won’t happen until the Fall.

Even with pumping the brakes a little bit, I can’t help but get a little excited about what the Buckeyes could potentially do on defense. If there is already this much of an improvement, there’s no way this unit can be as bad as it was last year.

Our first real chance to see something will be in the Spring Game in a couple of weeks.
