Ohio State Football not far behind Georgia, Alabama
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team doesn’t deserve to be called the best team in the country right now. Both Georgia and Alabama are closer to that title than the Buckeyes are. Georgia is the defending national champion and Alabama won the title before that over the Buckeyes.
Even though those two programs are a step higher than the Ohio State football program right now, that doesn’t mean they are light years ahead of them. The Buckeyes are closer to those programs than some in the media want to give them credit for.
I’d argue that Ohio State has the best offense in the country. Statistically, that was a fact last season. C.J. Stroud and TreVeyon Henderson will only get better this season too so they will be even better. It’s the defense that makes them behind the other two programs.
Georgia had an all-time defense last season. They lose some players but will still probably have the best defense in the country. Alabama still has an elite defense as well. Ohio State needs to prove that they have improved on that side of the ball before they are truly an elite team overall.
Ryan Day has taken steps to improve that side of the ball. He basically overhauled the entire defensive staff to help fix the issues that plagued this team. The jury is still out on whether or not the changes work, but the early signs in Spring practice are encouraging.
We’re going to find out very quickly into the season whether or not the Buckeyes will be elite after they play Notre Dame in the opening game. That game should tell us right away how good this defense is. Again, no one is worried about the offense.
This team is very close to being the best team in college football. It just needs improvement in a few areas first. Once it gets those, look out!
