Ryan Day isn’t just the head coach of the Ohio State football program. He is a leader of men, and nothing illustrates that more than the Harry Miller situation.

The Ohio State football program has entrusted Ryan Day to lead the team as the head coach. He’s been very successful on the field, having lost just three regular-season games in three years on the job. But he’s more than just a guy that coaches football; he’s a leader of men.

The Harry Miller situation underscores just how important of a job that is. After Miller told Day of his intention to kill himself, Day immediately got Miller the help he needed. He didn’t stop and think about how this would affect the football aspect of things. He only cared about Miller the human being.

It’s not a stretch to say that Day’s actions helped save Miller’s life. Miller himself is extremely grateful for Day’s intervention, as he says in the video clip below.

Day’s job isn’t just to win football games. His job is to help kids turn into young men. His attention to Miller is so much bigger than the game of football. This is the type of thing that makes parents want to have their own sons play for the Ohio State football program because they know Ryan Day cares.

I’m sure other players have seen what Day has done for Miller and appreciate it greatly. They know he has their back too. That’s much more important than playing football, but it also helps keep this team together and be better when they do take the field.
