Ohio State Football’s biggest threats to the CFP
By Ryan Stano
The 2022 Ohio State football season is still months away, but we can still look ahead. Ohio State figures to be one of the favorites to win the Big Ten and make the College Football Playoff. What are some of the teams that could impede them from this goal?
The first team that comes to mind is Notre Dame since they are the Buckeyes’ first opponent of the season. They will likely be a top-ten team in the preseason polls. Despite having a first-time head coach, they could beat Ohio State. That would be a blow to their CFP hopes.
Another team that could be an issue is TTUN. After beating the Buckeyes for the first time in 10 years, TTUN made the CFP for the first time. They have had an adventurous offseason, but that doesn’t mean Ohio State can take them lightly anymore. The Buckeyes can’t afford to lose to them again.
After those two teams on Ohio State’s schedule, you have to look at other teams around the country that could keep them from getting in. Alabama and Georgia are obvious teams that could make the CFP after they were both in the National Championship Game.
Cincinnati proved they can make the Playoff without being in a power conference. They lose some great talent though, so they may not be the threat they were in 2021. USC could be better with Lincoln Riley there now. Oklahoma won’t be automatically bad either. Clemson could make a comeback.
There are other teams in the SEC that have a chance to make some noise too. Texas A&M and LSU are the ones that come to mind. The Ohio State football program would hate to see two SEC teams get into the Playoff once again because that diminishes their chances of getting in.
It should be a fascinating season of college football. Only six more months until it starts!
