Ohio State Football: Kerry Coombs has lost his recruiting touch
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has signed most of their recruits for this signing period. The last one that they need to sign is Gabe Powers, a linebacker from Marysville. But it’s who the Buckeyes didn’t sign on Wednesday that might be the biggest deal.
Ohio State lost four-star cornerback Terrance Brooks to Texas after he had been committed to the Buckeyes. According to Ryan Day, this was something that was unexpected. They thought he was going to sign his letter of intent today and become a Buckeye.
This isn’t as much of a reflection on Day as it is on Kerry Coombs. Coombs is the one who recruits in the secondary and is supposed to be the ace recruiter on staff. Instead, he has lost the two best recruits he was supposed to have brought in for the 2022 recruiting class.
Brooks is the second cornerback who backed out of his commitment with the Buckeyes. Jaheim Singletary, a five-star corner from Jacksonville, de-committed from the program back in August. He would have been the best corner the Buckeyes had in this class.
While Coombs did land five-star recruit Sonny Styles, that was a given. Styles is a local kid from Pickerington that was always going to come here. All Coombs needed to do was not completely screw up his commitment and he was going to be a Buckeye.
If Coombs is losing recruits like this, he’s of no value to the Buckeyes. We’ve already seen that he can’t coordinate a defense and has been replaced in that regard. If he can’t be valuable as a recruiter, the Buckeyes need to hire someone else in his sport who can.
This recruiting class is still going to be really good. It just should have been better had Coombs been able to hold onto two great cornerback prospects.
