Ohio State Football looks better in massive victory vs. Akron
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team had struggled to put together a complete game all season long. They lost to Oregon and struggled against Tulsa in the last two weeks. It looked like the Buckeyes were going to struggle against vs. Akron early as well after the Zips took a 7-0 lead.
Ohio State then proceeded to score 52 unanswered points and looked much better on both sides of the ball. In his first collegiate start, Kyle McCord was 13/18 for 319 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. All in all, it was a mixed bag for the true freshman.
McCord only threw it down the field a few times, but he wasn’t afraid to do it. He was able to open up the offense more with the threat of throwing it deep. His one interception was a very bad throw, and that’s something that he needs to fix if he wants to keep the starting job.
Was this performance good enough to supplant C.J. Stroud as the starting quarterback for the rest of the season? That remains to be seen. It wasn’t a great performance and this was just Akron. He could have performed better to truly take that job away.
The Buckeyes were still able to win the game 59-7. Despite a bizarre incident on the sidelines, this is the type of game that Ohio State needed. They were able to get after the quarterback much better in this game too, accumulating 8 sacks.
The defensive line was able to play a lot better in this one as well. Tyliek Williams had three sacks and Haskell Garrett also had two sacks in this one. That’s the type of performance that the Buckeyes need to have once they play better teams later in the year.
All in all, it was a pretty solid victory. I’m not sure how much it means because it’s just Akron. Jack Miller played the entire fourth quarter in this one, so I’m not sure how much we really learned. Next week against Rutgers will tell us a lot.
