Ohio State Football: With Stroud out, McCord has chance to shine
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team will be making a change at the quarterback position. Speaking today on his radio show, Ryan Day indicated that C.J. Stroud will take the week off to rest his injured shoulder. That leaves Kyle McCord and Jack Miller as the quarterbacks against Akron.
This is some big news. McCord has been working with the backups, so it stands to reason that he will be the one who starts on Saturday. He now has a chance to seize the starting job if he lights the world on fire against Akron on Saturday night in the Shoe.
I said last night that McCord should get the start if Stroud is hurt. That shoulder injury is clearly something that is hampering Stroud’s ability to make deep throws. A week off should help that heal, and against Akron, Ohio State can trot anyone out there and win.
But what this also does is give McCord a chance to win the starting job for himself outright. If he goes out there with a command of the offense and leads the Buckeyes up and down the field, he has to get a chance to supplant Stroud as the starter moving forward.
Day’s job is to put the player out there who gives the Buckeyes the best chance to win games. McCord has a chance on Saturday night to show that player is him. He may not get another chance like this so he has to make the most of it. I expect him to.
I think this is the start of McCord being the starter for the rest of the season. I really think he’s going to play super well and take that job by force. He is going to be the missing link in this offense and have the Buckeyes scoring points all game long.
Saturday night just became a whole lot more interesting.
