Ohio State needs to be prepared from the beginning

One of the major characteristics is the favorite team has to overlook their opponent. Whether that is not respecting their skill, looking ahead to next week, or thinking they can have the week off, these are the times the underdog can pull out a win. Looking at Ohio State’s schedule there is a reason to believe week one might be a little bit trickier than imagined.

Minnesota is coming off a down year where they were not able to put everything together, ending the year at 3-4. They will host the Buckeyes on a Thursday night to kick off the season. The abnormal timing, on the road, and a night game meet some of the traditional characteristics of a trap game. The other piece is that Ohio State will host Oregon the following week. If the team starts looking ahead they could find themselves in an early hole.

Luckily for Ohio State, the first game of the season is hard to overlook. Especially when breaking in a new quarterback, that first game is extra important. This should not be a case of the Buckeyes losing themselves, but there are enough elements there that Ryan Day will need to help his team focus on the task at hand.

If the Buckeyes did lose this game, the season would be over almost as soon as it had begun. That would be a problem. The next opportunity for the Buckeyes to lose is the team that came the closest to beating them last year in the Big Ten.
