What Quinn Ewers reclassifying means for the future of Ohio State Football
By Ryan Stano
The best recruit in the history of Ohio State football has decided to enroll a year early. Here’s what that means for the future of the program not just in the quarterback room, but with recruits in future classes.
Quinn Ewers has opened up a can of worms. Now that he has decided to play for the Ohio State football program a year early, all kinds of things have changed. First and foremost, the future of the Ohio State quarterback room has changed in a big way.
Now that Ewers is in the mix, that means four quarterbacks that have never thrown a pass in college will be battling for the starting job this season. As I wrote this morning, it’s unlikely that Ewers will be starting right out of the gate because he hasn’t gotten the work in yet.
This does also mess up the quarterback class for 2022. This means the Buckeyes grabbed two five-star quarterbacks in this class with Kyle McCord and Ewers. Whichever of the three quarterbacks don’t win the job will immediately transfer, and that hurts the depth at the position.
Besides impacting the Ohio State football program, this also hurts Texas high school football in a big way. They just had the best prospect in their state leave because he can’t profit off of his name, image, and likeness. You can bet other top prospects from that state will do the same.
This decision opens the door for other prospects to do this in other states as well. It’s going to be very interesting to see the fallout from this decision in other states where big-time recruits reside. It will also be interesting to see how Texas deals with this in terms of NIL laws.
Now that Ewers is officially a Buckeye, this season is going to be a lot more interesting. Fall practice is right around the corner and the Buckeyes will be playing their first game of the season later this month. A lot still needs to be decided before then.
