Ohio State Football: Moving Big Ten Championship is a mistake

Rotating the site of the Big Ten Championship game would be a mistake by the conference. It would hurt not only the Ohio State football program but other programs too.

Indianapolis is a great city. It does a marvelous job of hosting major sporting events, as evidence of its hosting of the entire NCAA Tournament this past season. It also has been the home of the Big Ten Championship Game since the conference added the game, and it will host the National Championship Game this season.

The Ohio State football team has grown accustomed to early December trips to Indy to play for the conference championship. It’s a great location for them because it’s an extremely easy drive across 70-West to get there from Columbus. Lucas Oil Stadium is filled to the brim with Buckeye fans.

But it’s not just Buckeye fans that pack the stadium. It’s Wisconsin fans or Northwestern fans or Iowa fans. The Big Ten Championship Game works in Indy because of its central location. Fans from most Big Ten schools can make it to the game by driving in their cars.

Stupid Kevin Warren said that they will be looking to rotate the site of the game. They may even have it in New York one year. That’s completely absurd. It was really stupid when the Big Ten Tournament on the basketball side was moved to Washington D.C. and NYC a couple of times. This would rival that stupidity.

I could see the game being moved to Chicago. That’s a fairly central location as well and is where the Big Ten headquarters are. But the problem with both Chicago and New York is that they are outdoor stadiums that would be played during the month of December.

You don’t want the weather to be a factor in a game that determines who the best team is in your conference. At that point, it should just be about the skill of the team. That’s why hosting it in Indy with the window and roof closed is such a good idea.

It’s not shocking that Warren came up with another dumb idea. It’s just disheartening at this point.
