Ohio State football: Three most important players for 2021
By Ryan Stano
The starting quarterback is still up for debate. We don’t know who will win the starting job. But it’s clearly a two-man race between C.J. Stroud and Kyle McCord. Jack Miller’s performance in the Spring Game knocks him out of contention to actually win the job.
Whoever the starting quarterback is will have the single most important job on the team. They will determine the ceiling of this squad. If they play well, Ohio State can win a national title. If they don’t the Buckeyes likely lose in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
Stroud and McCord both have the talent to be truly great. McCord has perhaps the strongest arm of any of the quarterbacks on the roster. Stroud has the experience of being in the offense a year longer and seems to have the respect of the roster a little bit more.
The Ohio State football program just lost perhaps the most talented quarterback in school history in Justin Fields. Whoever takes his spot has big shoes to fill. I’m not expecting either of these guys to be as good as him. But I am expecting them to be at least 80% as good as he was.
That’s all the Buckeyes need in order for them to get what they want. The rest of the offense is talented enough to carry the team. As long as the quarterback doesn’t actively hurt the team, they should have a chance to win it all.
