Ohio State football: DeWine to sign NIL executive order
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team might get some resolution on an NIL bill before July 1st after all as Governor Mike DeWine is set to sign an executive order granting athletes the ability to profit off of name, image, and likeness.
Name, image, and likeness have been a huge topic of discussion over the last few months in regard to college athletics. Several states have already drafted up bills to make it legal and it will certainly help colleges and universities in those states to have an advantage.
Unfortunately, Ohio is not one of them right now. The Ohio State football program was expecting to have some sort of guidance on that issue before July 1. Then politics got in the way, and delays were expected. It doesn’t sound like there’s going to be any more delays.
Governor Mike DeWine made an announcement today stating that he had signed an executive order that will allow college athletes to make money off of their name, image, and likeness. He was joined by a host of Ohio State figures like President Kristina Johnson and Gene Smith.
It’s unclear exactly what the bill will entail and what kind of restrictions will be in place, but my guess is that it’s similar to the one that the House and Senate were trying to pass earlier this week. It seems like a good thing for the Ohio State football program.
It’s very good that the Governor decided to step in and do what’s right for all of the college athletes in the state of Ohio. This benefits all D-1 schools and athletes. It’s also good we no longer have to deal with the nonsense that politicians tried to insert along with this bill before.
This is just one less thing that Ryan Day needs to worry about. It can also help with the recruiting effort that he has put forth for the last month or so.
